Through the Valley of Shadows.
Many fans already knew Captain Christopher Pike from the unaired pilot episode of The Original Series, “The Cage,” and the season-one two-parter “The Menagerie,” which resurrected some of that unused footage. In his first appearance, Pike is a spry captain leading his crew on a mission of exploration. When we see him in “The Menagerie,” he is confined to a wheelchair, his face covered in scars. What happened in between has remained a fifty-year mystery—at least on screen. Star Trek: Discovery finally filled in the blanks and made Pike’s self sacrifice canon in “Through the Valley of Shadows.”
In this episode of The Edge, hosts Amy Nelson and Patrick Devlin discuss Pike’s decision to glimpse into his future and accept the inevitability of a crippling accident to retrieve the much-needed time crystal from the sacred Klingon planet Boreth. We ask ourselves if we would choose to see our own possible future and accept it knowing that we could follow a new path—but that others would suffer instead. We also debate whether the Control artificial intelligence is present in all Section 31 ships and why it needs Burnham to further its mission.
